Teaching kids to declutter is a valuable lesson we can pass on to the next generation. It’s not just about creating a tidy room; it’s about giving them the tools to evaluate their belongings, make decisions, and feel empowered about their choices.
Marie Kondo in The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up emphasizes the importance of decluttering on your own, without others influencing your decisions, because only you truly understand what “sparks joy” in your life. When kids learn this skill, they’re not only organizing their space—they’re learning how to tune into their own values and priorities, free from outside expectations.
If we aren’t intentional, our own patterns of attachment can influence them. It’s easy to pass down the mindset of holding onto something “just in case,” keeping things out of guilt, or not wanting to let go of items tied to memories. But what if, instead, we taught them to look at an item and ask: Does this add value to my life? Does it make me happy?
I had a moment recently when my daughter decided to donate a big collection of her stuffed animals. I was so proud of her ability to let go and make thoughtful choices. But I also found my heart tug as I looked at those stuffies—realizing they marked a chapter of her childhood that she’s now outgrowing. (Don’t worry, there are a few more😂). It was a powerful reminder of how deeply our attachments run and why it’s so important to empower kids to make these decisions on their own.
Even as adults, this process isn’t easy, but when kids gain the confidence to declutter and make intentional choices, they build clarity and freedom for themselves.

This is where working with a professional organizer can really make a difference. As organizers, we don’t have emotional attachments to your belongings, but we do listen carefully to what you’re saying about them. That perspective allows us to ask the right questions and guide you through decisions with clarity and compassion. When we work alongside clients, it’s not about telling them what to keep or let go—it’s about helping them reflect and decide for themselves.
Have you ever had a moment like this with a young one or your own belongings? I’d love to hear how you navigate these emotions while decluttering.
